1908 - Moody, Thomas Leroy * -  (US Marines)  In 1919, Leroy was serving in Belgium as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Aviation Corps.

1914 - Moody, Lester * -  In 1919, Lester was serving in China with the United States Asiatic Fleet.

Bill was born on Feb 7, 1916 in Oklahoma.  During World War II, he served as a First Lieutenant in the Air Sea Rescue School in England and on November 13, 1943, he was killed in an airplane crash in the North Sea.

1936 - Blanchard, Stewart E. (US Army) *  Stewart was a Captain in the Army when he was Killed in Action.   His brother of Harold, Class of 1940, was also KIA

1936 - Medico, John Leonard*  (US Army)  Sergeant   He was a Recruit Trainer in Stockton, California and      served in the Pacific Theater during World War II

1936 - Victor, Tony  * (US Army)  On January 21, 1945,  his 19th mission, he and all the men on his plane bailed out over Mannheim, Germany and were imprisoned.

1937 - Brackett, Claude* -  SSGT US ARMY WORLD WAR II    Sergeant Brackett died in 1954 from the          effects of torture by the Japanese while being held as a Prisoner of War in the Philippines. He may have      been part of the Batsan Death March.
    

1937  - Kopenhefer, Ralph Forest *  -  First Sgt in the US Army - Medical unit.  Ralph left high school after      his sophomore year to join the Army.  In 1940, he was stationed at the Fort Missoula Military                    Reservation at Gold Springs in Missoula, Montana.

1937 - Reis, Frank Mathew *  -  (US Army)  Served in Patton's army.  

1938 - Cunningham, Thomas * -  He went to college after high school and was possibly in the ROTC program because he was in the US Navy Reserves.  His rank was Lt JG in the reserves.  He was later in the US Navy and is listed on the Honolulu Memorial where it says that he was Missing in Action/Buried at Sea but provides a date of death as December 24, 1944.

1938 - Perry, Frank*  (US Army) He served in Japan during the occupation.

1940  - Anderson, Roland*  (US Navy)  -  Although a Canadian by birth, he quit Laton High School to join        the American Forces.  He was injured during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 1941.

1940 - Blanchard, Harold C. *  (US Navy?)   KIA on 29 Feb 1944.  His brother Stewart, Class of 1936, was also KIA. Harold was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 764 Bomb Squadron.

​Carl Love was a Seaman 2nd class, stationed on the USS Helena in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 6, 1941.  Carl died a few days later on 11 December 1941.

)    After graduating from Laton High in 1941,  I attended beauty school and went to work at Cooper's Department store in Fresno.  During a lunch break one
​day there was a band marching down Fulton street playing military music and I followed it to a recruiting station and signed up to be a WAVE.  You had to be 20 years old to join.  
     I was sent to Hunter's College in New York City for basic training.  Upon graduation I attended Aviation Machinists Mate school in Norman, Oklahoma. From there I was assigned to a Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Los Alamitos, California.            
     When the war ended I returned  home and then went to Santa Barbara State College (later UCSB) where I chose a Physical Education major. After my Freshman year I married my husband and never went back to college.

1941 - Gregory, John* -  (US Army)  John served March 1943 to December  1945 with the 37th Infantry Division and served as an infantryman in the South Pacific.  In a newspaper article dated March 2,              19??  we learn "that he was burned on the left hand and left shoulder by a phosphorus grenade while        serving with the 37th Division in the Philippines and has been evacuated by transport plane to a nearby      general hospital."  The article continues "Gregory was attending Fresno State College when he was              inducted into the army in May 1943.  He received his training at Camp Roberts and was sent to                Guadalcanal in September, 1943.  Later he was in the battle on Bougainville, for which he received the      Combat  Infantryman Badge.  He landed with the 37th Division on Luzon and was in Manila when he          was wounded.

1941 - Hochderffer, Jerald* -  (????)  Jerry was a tail gunner on a dive bomber.  He was on the Lexington air craft carrier when it was sunk by enemy fire but he survived.  He received four battle stars and a          commendation from the Queen of England

1947? - Avila, Stanley *   (US Army) Private Avila was a member of the 23rd Infantry                Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.  He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North        Korea on September 13, 1951. Private Avila was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat              Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National  Defense Service Medal and the Korea War Service Medal.   
  

1947 - Rutherford, John *  (Merchant Marines) 

1947? - Smith, Jimmy Dale  
*  (US Army) KIA Private First Class Smith was a medic with the Medical Company, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was Killed in Action while tending his wounded comrades in South Korea on July 30, 1950. Private First Class Smith was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

1948 - Blowers, Vivian  -  (Air Force WAF)   Vivian married Arlo Potter and after he retired as a Lt. Col in          the Air Force, they moved to Pennsylvania where they were in farming and raising cattle.  Arlo passed        away in 2009 and Vivian is now living in an assisted care facility near their children in Wyoming. 

1948 - London, James  (USAF)  In July 1946, James entered the U.S. Maritime Academy in Alameda,
     California.  In 1947 he went to work on his father's farm until 1951 when he joined the Air Force.  He        retired in October 1971 after 20 years of service.  He is now living in Texas.

1950 - Fraley, William* (US Army)   Staff Sargent Fraley served during the Korean War however, he was later stationed in Germany where he was also an Honor Guard.  One of this duties was overseeing the imprisonment of Nazi war criminal Rudolf Hess at Spandau.  Upon returning home Bill attended Bradley      University in Peoria, Illinois through the VA loan program.

1951 - Adams, James  (US Navy)  After high school, Jim attended UC Berkeley where he was in the Navy          ROTC program.  He entered the US Navy following his graduation and became a pilot.  He later                  returned to Laton High School as a math and science teacher.

     1955 - Madruga, Jerry*  (USAF)  In September 1954, Jerry
     joined the U.S. Air Force then reenlisted in 1958.  In 1959,        his ​father passed away and Jerry left a promising career in        the Air Force to operated the family farm.  He was later            hired as a civilian fire fighter at the Lemoore Naval Air              Station, reaching the position of Assistant Fire Chief.  He           retired from that job after 20 years of service.

​1957 - Adams, Dick  (US Marines)   Dick (R.T.) spent 20 years in the military and after having earned his  wings as a Naval Aviator in the USMC and flying two tours in Vietnam - first in Hueys on med-evacs and then the Cobras gunbirds, he retired.  He then worked another 20 years in Civil Service instructing in helicopter simulators. He just "changed hats."  He spent another three years as an instructor with CUBIC, Inc., who staff the simulators for the USMC, at New River Air Station, Jacksonville, NC.  He finally retired leaving time for he and Claudia to do some traveling, going out on their boat, fishing and just enjoying life.

1959 - Winslow, Ray  (US Navy)  Ray joined the Navy in 1964 to fly jets and eventually flew 123 combat missions over North Vietnam. He joined Continental Airlines while out of the Navy for a short time in 1969. He returned to the Navy where he retired in 1985 as a Captain. He then retired from Continental in 2001 after flying the DC10, B747 and B777.  Sue and Ray lived on the island of Guam for 5 years in the 90's, flying to many small Pacific islands.  After the airline, Ray flew a Gulfstream for the producer of the "Simpsons" for three years. Now he works part time flying a Gulfstream, mostly in Europe.

1963 - Elmer Lawrence Borges  (Army National Guard)  Co A 2nd BN 160th INF.   He enlisted in 1965 - served 6 years active and 6 years inactive to 1972.  Elmer served during the Watts Riots and the           Berkeley Riots. He was a Sergeant E-6.  Elmer went to Grant Grammar School and Laton Elementary prior to Laton High School.

1963 - Vanderheiden, Paul  (US Navy) I was in the Navy from Oct. 1963 until Oct.1967 during the Vietnam war, served as a petty officer 2nd class; E-5. After leaving the service I settled in the Hartford                   Connecticut area and Joined the Hartford police dept. During my 22 plus years on the dept. I was a           homicide and major crimes Detective, retiring in 1992. I then spent the next 15 years as a Special           Deputy, with the U.S Marshal's office in Hartford, retiring in 2008. During the time with Hartford PD, I     also spent 6 years in the Army National guard, 143 rd Military Police company as a Staff Sergeant E-6 .     I was the first squad leader and training sergeant.  After retiring, I now live in Venice Florida from             October 1 to May 1 and in Connecticut during the summer.

1965 - McHone, Ron  (Army) Wounded in Vietnam and was awarded The Purple Heart

1965 - Mos, Ron  * (US Marines) K Co, 3rd Bn, 9th MARINES, 3RD MARDIV, III MAF  On May 20, 1967, Company K, point for the battalion, made contact with what it initially estimated to be an enemy  platoon deployed in mutually supporting bunkers in a draw in vicinity of grid coordinates YD 104644. The enemy, now estimated to be at least a company, took Company K under fire.  To relieve pressure on Company K, Company L maneuvered to the flank of the enemy position, but was unable to link up with Company K because of heavy enemy fire. The enemy had sprung a well concealed ambush, using machine guns, grenades, and 60 mm mortars. Companies K and L were concentrated on high ground but still on the sides of a draw and receiving intense enemy fire. Air Strikes were called. Both companies spent the night on opposite sides of the draw with the enemy force between them, while supporting arms pounded the enemy positions all night. Killed were 25 sailors and Marines from the  3rd Battalion, 9th Marines in heavy fighting including Corporal Ronald Bruce Mos, a machine gunner from Laton, California

1969 - DeLuca, Victor  (USAF)    I was drafted into the ARMY, however, three days before I reported to      Ft Ord I had managed to get into the Air Force ROTC program. And for a bribe of an extra $100   bucks      a month... I flew a jet for the next 25 years. After two more years of college, one year of pilot training,      three months of every kind of survival training and four months of learning how to fly a KC-135 Tanker,      I was ready to go and do what I was trained to do... Finally in December of   1975 I was on the Island        of Guam getting ready to go to Vietnam. On the day of the deployment the war in Vietnam was                declared over. I never went in country. I was part of an "Air Bridge"  that refueled airplanes leaving            Vietnam for the United States. 

1969 - Jett, Michael Stephen * (US Army)  C TRP, 2ND SQDN, 17TH CAVALRY, 101ST ABN DIV, USAR Sgt. Michael Jett was killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam on May 31, 1970.

1971 - Gregory, Thomas J. - The following is from a 2002 Hanford Sentinel article, "Navy Capt. Thomas J. Gregory, son of John and Marion Gregory of Laton, has retired after 31 years of service.  Gregory most recently served as Branch Head, Surface Ship Branch, Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C.
     During his career, Gregory was commanding officer of four ships.  He was also assigned duties on the Joint Staff and a tour on the staff of the director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion as well as the Nuclear Propulsion Training Unit at Idaho Falls, Idaho.  He also served as Deputy Director for Theater Air Warfare on the Chief of Naval Operations staff where he was responsible for the Navy missile defense and interoperability for the Surface Combatant Force.  In October 2001, he became the Branch Head for the newly formed Surface Ship Branch, responsible for more than 120 ships including ship concept development, new construction, life cycle support and decommissionings.   
     Gregory is a 1971 graduate of Laton High School.  He is also a 1975 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD., with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering and a 1992 graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, R.I. with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies."
